In the last half of the 19th Century a new doctrine developed among the Indians of the Columbia Basin, which the white settlers called the Dreamer faith because its principal directives and promises came to its followers in dreams. They were directed to abandon the customs and clothing of the white man and to return to the ways of ir own ancestors. By doing so they would be rewarded and their ancestors would return to life make the white man disappear from their lands.
