:I have started to think of modernism as the final break with the evolution of the human mind from the

:yearning for shared consciousness that we may not even be able to understand anymore.

Perhaps the growth of individualism only seems to be a departure from a shared consciousness whereas it may in fact be a process whereby Humanity as an organism is attempting to find a more efficient means of evolving. Increased individuality, means more units that are capable of innovation or solving problems in ways that would be beyond the scope of a homogenous group. So the organism frequently spawns purely creative intelligences which seem to be capable of no really useful function, other than making works of art, querying their existence, creating dissatisfaction in the masses, and shooting the breeze on BBS’s. To balance the equation, Humanity produces a plethora of administrators and bureaucrats that ensure its binding and cohesiveness. But it is the creative intelligence that knows how to exploit accidents and is at home within the domain of Chaos. It is from the alchemy of chaos and creativity that new possibilities are discovered; things that had, hitherto, existed beyond the bounds of popular thought. So we 'advance', not in a direct ascent, but in a sporadic, tangential manner.
