: : Okay, what's Slate's email for submissions. Or could it be that Slate excludes people, probably won't allow anyone to email them?

: : Slate doesn't belong in the zine list, if there's not an email address to submit to...

What bothers me more than whether they accept
unsolicited material or not(and it appears
they now do) is that one must pay to read the
journal, which in my opinion is defeatist.
The Internet and it's contents, in this case
regarding ezines, should be for everyone's viewing
pleasure, not just those who can afford the
luxury. That's part of the benefit of having
and on-line journal-editors don't have to
depend on gathering an audiance through subscritpions or through seeking out distributors. Already, access to the Internet
as a whole, is more readily available to
many people at no cost- universities, libraries,
some cafes and restaurants, are offering free
access.

Further, I don't feel it is negligent that many zine editors don't/can't pay contributors. The whole non-monetary system is more beneficial to all. Readers have free access, thus there is the potential for more readers than if they had to go out and pay $8.95 for AGNI or the like. If I choose to pay for access to a journal, I'd rather pay the money for a hard copy of AGNI or Ploughshares, that I can read with more comfort. Even if I had a laptop I'd rather curl up with a book *s* It just a matter of what is offered
and how each offers different and equally useful
benifits, not that one is necessarily better than
the other.

In the case of Recursive Angel and The Orphic
Chronicle, where the journal does pay the poets,
I think this is fantastic, but the money comes
out of the pocket of the editors, not via the
grants that afford some print journals to pay.
The same for poets who receive foundation awards,
these are for works in print. I'd like to see
Internet journals and collections published on
the Internet, also eligible for such monies.
I believe there are movements underway making
investigations into these matters. If anyone
has any more information on this, I'd be
interested to hear of it. We should be moving
toward a bridging of the two mediums, not a
separate road. Though a few separate byways
may be needed before the 'other side' sees the
value in these electronic paths. My Slyman is
making some great progress in this respect,
also Jennifer Ley of Perihelion(and others),
offering awards for exemplary sites/editors on the Internet.

: I would have said the same - but for the sake of people just listing what they found interesting (for reading or submissions) let it slosh. This is not some official poll. 'prestige' remains - despite a few attempts to attribute it - undefined.

: & I hardly see what 'outside' readership has to do with the matter unless one wishes to concede some defacto primacy to print medium? I certainly don't - Not to Vendler, not to Parisi, nor Earl nor Alexander nor Pinski ad naus.

: Neither Jacket nor Slate accept submissions (one reason why I didn't include them on the original 'starter' list). I'd been thinking in terms of pubs that both have discerning and fairly tough editorial standards (tastes & genre notwithstanding) and which afford the opportunity to both read and submit.

: 'Prestige' seems to conjure up a host of requirements which a few posters seem to reduce to maters of arguable 'taste/edge'. I've yet to see a site, Jacket and Slate included, that didn't present a 'mixed bag' depending on the reader. But I am surprised that none mentioned 'Non' which I find one of the most consistently(but not always) flawless productions. For that matter, Snakeskin does stuff that nobody else touches - particular in humor - & which I'd give pretty high marks.
