The artist is at a serious disadvantage when it come to breeding memes. Just think of the GoldenArches or Mickey Mouse or Michael Jackson or the Coke or Nike logos and slogans and you will see that the artist simply cannot compete, doesn't have the resources to go up against those breeders. Maybe on a more subversive, subliminal level...the level of artistic activity, but then, can it be done intentionally and effectively? Warhol was very good at holding the mirror up to reveal the culture's memes, though he created few new ones. The only one I can readily recall it the phrase ''fifteen minutes of fame''.
