Need some advice!!

I really want to go to graduate school in the states, but I really don't know which step I should take -
go to the Art Students League in NY and try to build a stronger foundation and apply to a so called FAMOUS art school,
which would be very competative, or apply to a not so competative graduate program and achieve an MFA and then apply to
the so called FAMOUS art schools.

I'm really lost!
I would like to hear from anybody who is able to, and is willing to give me an advice on this matter.
