Julian Schnabel and David Bowie were on Charlie
Rose Friday night talking about the movie.
JS was himself and pretty entertaining especially
during a discussion about how people misunderstood
Warhol. He said the only other person in the twentieth
century more misunderstood was Hitler.
Even Charlie Rose was at a loss for words. JS, of
course, seemed oblivious to what he'd said.
It's frightening how eager Rose was to hear what JS had
to say. There is still a wealthy and influential
audience for the sort of Picasso-esque artist/hero
Schnabel plays. They've been quiet lately but seem
to be ready to party again.
I like painting and I even enjoy watching Schnabel
and his friends perform and their silliness
balances the dour seriousness of others. The court
needs both it's jesters and its priests to entertain
the peasants. It is unnerving, though, when you
see the machinery being primed particularly when
you know the machine will probably roll over you
as it gains speed.
